Chinese New Year

Celebrate all the colour, excitement and tradition of the Chinese Lunar New Year at Brookfield Place with a schedule of festivities, installations and events.

Also known as the Lunar New Year, this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations run for two weeks from Friday, 16 February and will welcome in the Zodiac Year of the Dog. With a variety of cultural treats featuring throughout the precinct, you’re invited to enjoy some – or all – of the public festivities, including:

Lion Dancing Performance and Blessing of our Retailers
11.30am Friday 16 February
Kick off the Chinese New Year with a bang as you follow the lion on his path through the precinct, blessing tenants, visitors and guests and warding off ‘evil’ spirits. This traditional and lively spectacle of colour, noise, ceremony and dance features performers from the Ging Mo Academy and is always a highlight.

Chinese Lantern and Kite Installations
If quiet contemplation is more your thing, stop and pause a while in the shade as you admire the traditional lanterns adorning the trees on the podium level of Heritage Square. Another equally-Instagram-able installation this year will feature a canopy of kites over the grassed area of the Main Square.

Fortune Cookies
Another relatively new and deliciously fun tradition (that actually originated in a San Francisco bakery) will be the complimentary fortune cookies available from the concierge desks to welcome guests and visitors to Brookfield Place.
